G Phone

Google said on Monday it would offer a software system to make the Internet work as smoothly on mobile phones as it does on computers, seeking to spur change in a tightly controlled industry.

In its long-rumoured entry into the mobile phone market, the world's leading Internet company said it would start next week by allowing independent designers to tinker with its software, known as "Android." Google-based phones are due to appear in the latter half of next year.

Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile will start selling Google software-based phones next year. China Mobile, the world's largest mobile carrier, Japan's NTT DoCoMo and KDDI and European and Latin American operator Telefonica also said they were working with handset makers to develop Google-based phones.

Google, which has no immediate plans to make phones of its own, said it forged an alliance with 33 companies, including phone makers Motorola Inc, Samsung Electronics Co and High Tech Computer.

"We're hoping thousands of different mobile phones will be powered by Android," Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt told reporters on a conference call following the announcement.

Google said it is in no rush to see operators alter the way they charge for service, but new ways of making money such as advertising-subsidized offerings would eventually be possible.

Martina Hingis was Positive

Martina Hingis said Thursday she has been accused of testing positive for cocaine at Wimbledon, and then announced her retirement from professional tennis.

Hingis, a five-time Grand Slam champion and former Wimbledon winner, denied using cocaine.

"I find this accusation so horrendous, so monstrous that I've decided to confront it head on by talking to the press," she said. "I am frustrated and angry. I believe that I am absolutely 100 percent innocent."

Her voice broke as she fought back tears in reading the statement. At the end, she took no questions and left the news conference.

The 27-year-old Swiss player lost in the third round at Wimbledon to Laura Granville, 6-4, 6-2.
Hingis said the positive test, which could lead to a doping suspension of up to two years, led to her retirement because she doesn't want to spend years fighting the case.

Mario Widmer, Hingis' manager, said he did not know why she waited until now to make the announcement.

Hingis returned to the sport two years ago after a four-year absence because of injuries.

She won three straight Australian Open titles from 1997-99, and Wimbledon and the U.S. Open championships in 1997. She came within one match of winning the Grand Slam in 1997, losing only in the French Open final.

On March 31, 1997, Hingis became the youngest female player ever to lead the world rankings.
She was 16 years, 6 months and 1 day at the time. She is currently ranked No. 19.

Hingis, who lost in the third round of the U.S. Open, hasn't played since her second-round loss to Peng Shuai of China, 7-5, 6-1, in Beijing on Sept. 19.

Former top-ranked player Mats Wilander and Karel Novacek had positive tests for cocaine at the 1995 French Open. Both were banned for three months and ordered to return prize money and forfeit rankings points.

Others have tested positive for a variety of banned substances.

Hingis said she was accused by "an outsource testing company" of taking cocaine during Wimbledon. She said she was "shocked and appalled" when notified that her urine sample came back positive after the loss to Granville.

"They say that cocaine increases self-confidence and creates a type of euphoria," she said in a statement. "I don't know. I only know that if I were to try to hit the ball while in any state of euphoria, it simply wouldn't work.

"I would think that it would be impossible for anyone to maintain the coordination required to play top class tennis while under the influence of drugs. And I know one other thing — I would personally be terrified of taking drugs."

Hingis said she later underwent a privately arranged hair test which came back negative for cocaine. The official backup "B" sample test on her Wimbledon urine sample, however, tested positive for the drug.

Hingis said she hired an attorney who found "various inconsistencies" with the urine sample taken during Wimbledon.

"He is also convinced that the doping officials mishandled the process and would not be able to prove that the urine that was tested for cocaine actually came from me," she said.

Hingis said it could take years to fight her case.

"I have no desire to spend the next several years of my life reduced to fighting against the doping officials," she said. "The fact is that it is more and more difficult for me, physically, to keep playing at the top of the game.

"And frankly, accusations such as these don't exactly provide me with motivation to even make another attempt to do so."

Widmer said the test was on June 29 but that Hingis heard about the positive result in mid-September and the positive 'B' sample two or three weeks later.

"She has great angst over this," Widmer said. "She is heartbroken. ... It's crazy. It's very complicated and complex."

WTA Tour chief executive Larry Scott said the tour had not received any official information about a positive test and "as a result we are not in a position to comment on the matter."

"However, it is important to remember that in the area of anti-doping, all players are presumed innocent until proven otherwise," Scott said.

Referring to her retirement, he said, "Martina Hingis is a tremendous champion and a fan favorite the world over. In her most recent comeback, she proved again that she can perform at the very highest levels of the game."

The national association Swiss Tennis issued a statement praising Hingis.

"With Martina a great player is retiring, who was always an example and a figurehead for tennis in Switzerland," association president Rene Stammbach said in the statement. "We deeply regret that Martina Hingis ended her outstanding career under the circumstances of such accusations."

Jennifer Lopez Pregnant!

Jennifer Lopez has kept her glossy pink lips sealed during recent public appearances, dancing around questions from interviewers wanting to know if she’s singing for two.

But her bump speaks loud and clear.

After Lopez made an appearance on MTV’s Total Request Live on October 8 to promote her new CD, Brave, cohost Damien Fahey told Us that her condition was obvious.

“I’ve been around a lot of pregnant women. She walked around like a pregnant woman, sat like a pregnant woman and stood like a pregnant woman,” he says. “If I were a betting man, I’d definitely bet she was pregnant.”

Indeed, Us has confirmed from multiple sources that Lopez is about four months pregnant with her first child. Or children – a source tells Us Lopez’s mother, Guadalupe, 61, “is proudly telling people she’s having twins.”

The 38-year-old singer-actress, who has long expressed her desire to have both career and kids, is ecstatic about the news.

“It’s a dream come true,” a Lopez source tells Us. “She and Marc are over the moon.”
Pregnancy news is especially sweet for Lopez, whom insiders believed was unable to carry a child at all. “[Conceiving] was a struggle for her,” says a source.

Seconds another, “This pregnancy is a miracle."

Anthony, 39, who has three children from prior relationships, has been equally eager to expand his brood.

When Anthony was recently asked to imagine his response to his wife being pregnant, he said, “It’s going to be me in handcuffs, because I will run down the street, screaming like a madman.”

Middle East's 20: Richest People

Sky-high oil prices may be quashing Americans' appetite to spend, but in parts of the Middle East it is stoking business and fueling immense fortunes. This is good news for the region's 20 richest billionaires, who hail from six countries, made their money in nine industries and were worth $123 billion in March when we last locked in net worths, up about 10% from the previous year.

Their total net worth accounted for 64% of the aggregate wealth of the region's 65 billionaires. Interestingly, only one in the top 20, Mohammed Al Amoudi, actually makes his fortune from oil; the rest are merely beneficiaries from all the oil money sloshing through the region.

That is especially true in Saudi Arabia, home to 25% of the world's oil reserves and seven members of our top 20. Their wealthiest citizen, and also the region's richest, is prominent: Saudi investor Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Alsaud ranked 13th in the world in March, then worth $20.3 billion. In July, the prince took public his Kingdom Holding Co., a conglomerate of banking, media, real estate and hotel investments, raising $2.3 billion. He still has a substantial stake in U.S. financial giant Citigroup (nyse: C - news - people ).

Another Saudi investor, Maan Al-Sanea, made news in April when he disclosed a 3.1% stake in HSBC (nyse: HBC - news - people ). The announcement propelled the former air force pilot--and, until then, low-profile businessman--into the limelight, and helped boost his fortune, which we estimated at $7.5 billion in March, to at least $10 billion.

Like Prince Alwaleed and Al-Sanea, a number of these moneyed Middle Easterners are investing overseas. Israeli property tycoon Yitzhak Tshuva bought Manhattan's storied Plaza Hotel in 2005 for $675 million. Further downtown, his fellow countryman, diamond mogul Lev Leviev, paid a reported $525 million for the historic New York Times building in April. The pair are joined in the top 20 by four other Israelis, including the only woman in the group, Shari Arison.

Across the Red Sea, business has been especially good for Egypt's risk-taking Sawiris family and its Orascom empire. Oldest son Naguib saw his fortune nearly quadruple in 2007 to $10 billion thanks to his Orascom Telecom's aggressive expansion into Greece and Italy. In addition, the company has mobile customers in seven fast-growing emerging markets in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Father Onsi and brother Nassef are also chasing developing markets: Their Orascom Construction company recently opened cement plants in South Africa, Algeria and Iraq.

Banking is actually the most common source of wealth among the region's 20 richest, with half a dozen making their money in that industry. Among these financial types are Dubai's wealthiest banker, Mashreqbank's Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair, worth $8 billion in March, and Husnu Ozyegin, Turkey's only billionaire in the top 20 (another 24 are billionaires). Ozyegin made the bulk of his $3.5 billion fortune in banking, as founder of Finansbank, then sold his shares to National Bank of Greece (nyse: NBG - news - people ) in 2005.

These days he stays busy (and wealthy) as owner of a hotel, shopping mall and eight Marks & Spencer (other-otc: MASPY - news - people ) retail stores in Turkey and Russia.

Saudi Arabia's Al Rajhi family, whose eponymous bank manages the wealth of everyday Saudis, is perhaps the region's oldest banking family. Worth a collective $15.9 billion, the four aging Al Rajhi brothers (two of whom rank in the top 20) have controlled the bank since it began in the 1940s as a desert trading post.

Looking ahead, expect new fortunes and big investments to come out of the region in time for our 2008 billionaire rankings.

Judge dismisses hit-and-run case against Pamela Bach

A misdemeanor hit-and-run charge against Pamela Bach, David Hasselhoff's ex-wife, was dropped Tuesday after she agreed to pay for what her attorney called minor damage.

A Superior Court judge granted a defense motion of a permanent stay of the charge — equivalent to a dismissal — after the woman whose car was struck withdrew her complaint.

"We presented an affidavit to the court that she was no longer desirous of prosecution," said Bach's attorney, Mark Geragos. He declined to identify the woman.

Geragos said he talked to the woman earlier in the week and she agreed to withdraw the case, while Bach agreed to pay for damages.

The attorney said the damage amounted to little more than a "paint transfer." Damage estimates of between $700 and $1,300 were submitted, and insurance companies would handle the payment, Geragos said.

Meg White sex tape is a fake

The British record label representative for the rock group The White Stripes said an alleged Meg White sex tape making the rounds on the Internet is a fake.

While several blogs and Web sites identified the woman in the pornographic video clip as the band's drummer, NME.com declared it a sham Monday.

The group's U.K. label also denied the woman in the video is White.

"We as a label believe some people have a very twisted sense of humor and this prank is in particularly bad taste," a representative said. "The tape circulating on the Internet as featuring Meg White is fake. It's definitely not Meg."

The White Stripes recently canceled a planned tour because Meg White is reportedly suffering from acute anxiety.

Blyk starts first free mobile phone service

Nokia's former president is targeting the lucrative teenage mobile market with Blyk, the world's first service to offer "free" texts and calls in exchange for sending advertising directly to users' phones.

The pan-European service, which launched in the UK today, is offering 16-24 year olds 217 texts and 43 minutes of calls every month – and no contract to sign.

Blyk also plans to enter the market in France, Italy, Germany and Spain.

To sign up to the service the teen-to-twenties group – a 4.5m strong-market – need to answer 40 or 50 questions detailing their preferences on a range of topics such as entertainment, sport and music.

Blyk matches the profiles with relevant advertising, and targets customers with up to 6 text messages a day. The group has secured 44 brands to date, including Adidas, Coca-Cola, Boots, NatWest and MasterCard.

The brands will be charged between 2p and 20p for each text message sent to one of Blyk's members.

In the current stampede away from traditional methods of advertising, towards online and mobile phone advertising, advertisers face the conundrum of targeting their content without invading privacy.

Blyk's co-founder Pekka Ala-Pietilä, who ended 20 years at Nokia with 6 years as the group's president, said: "By means of profile questions at sign-up and ongoing SMS polling during membership Blyk Media enables brands to target messages like no other medium."

Mr Ala-Pietilä confirmed that none of Blyk's users would see their privacy invaded by the release of their personal information.

Blyk users will actually make calls and texts on the Orange network which the group has an agreement with.

Pop star Britney Spears was charged on Friday with hit and run and driving without a valid license, a spokesman with the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office said.

The 25-year-old singer was charged with one count of hit and run causing property damage and one count of driving without a valid California driver's license, both misdemeanors.

The charges, which each carry a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, stem from an incident in a private parking lot in the San Fernando Valley on August 6.

Vanessa Hudgens: Problems

An attorney wants "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens to dance to his tune.
A lawyer has sued the actress for unpaid fees totalling about $150,000, report news sources.

In a lawsuit filed Monday, Sept. 17, claims that Hudgens, 18, violated a written contract that stated she would pay Brian L. Schall 5 percent of her earnings while he was representing her for legal matters. He estimates that the period began in October 2005 and that she has since earned $5 million since then, thus owing him a balance of $150,000 after paying "some, but not all" fees.

There's no comment from Hudgens' camp.

The starlet has recently been in the news for nude pictures of her that have surfaced on the Internet.

Hudgens is best known for her starring role as the plucky Gabriella in the Disney Channel "High School Musical" franchises and has guest starred on the network's various other shows. The premiere of "HSM 2" in August broke numerous records, including becoming the most-watched basic cable telecast ever, drawing in an estimated 17.2 million viewers.

Hudgens is reportedly dating her "HSM" costar Zac Efron, who is also featured in the film "Hairspray." She also released her solo debut album "V" in 2006.

Turkey to Pull Plug on YouTube Over Video Slam

Turkey has again ordered its nationwide telecom to deny users access to video sharing site YouTube. This time, the controversy is focused on a video that a court said insults the country's founder, its president, its prime minister and its army. Turkey temporarily blocked the site earlier this year for similar reasons. Other countries have also called for bans over allegedly insulting videos.

A Turkish court has ordered the country's telecommunications company to block access to the popular video-sharing site YouTube Latest News about YouTube because of clips the court deems insulting to leading political figures.

It was the second time Turkey has blocked access to YouTube. In March, the site owned by Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Latest News about Google was blocked for two days after a complaint that some clips insulted Turkey's founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The ban was lifted after the offending clips were removed.

On Wednesday, a court in the eastern city of Sivas ordered the block, saying video on the site insulted Ataturk, President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the army.
The decision drew criticism Thursday from journalist watchdog groups.

"Blocking an entire Web site because of a few videos is a disproportionate measure," the Paris-based Reporters Without Borders said. "We urge the authorities to reverse this decision."
The site could be accessed on Thursday, and it was not clear when the ban would come into effect.

Thailand seeks to block YouTube videos again

Thailand is seeking to block clips on video-sharing Web site YouTube that accuse the chief royal adviser of masterminding last year's bloodless coup, a top Justice Ministry official said on Friday.

The government, which lifted a five-month ban on YouTube in August after it agreed to block clips deemed offensive to revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej, was seeking a court order to block two video clips posted recently on www.youtube.com.

"In the next couple of days, we will seek a court order to block those links deemed to cause public confusion and threaten national security," Yanaphon Youngyuen, head of the Justice Ministry's Internet crimes unit, told Reuters.

"While awaiting the court order, we are seeking cooperation from Internet service providers to block those links," he said.

The two-part postings, entitled "The Crisis of Siam," and running 10:42 minutes and 6:06 minutes, accuse former Prime Minister Prem Tinsulanonda of plotting the September 2006 coup, not the generals who took credit.

Such allegations against Prem, now Privy Council chief, have been made by supporters of ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra during demonstrations and denied repeatedly by the generals and the government they appointed.

"Pa has been through such allegations many times and everyone knows what the truth is," Prem's spokesman, Vice Admiral Prajun Tampratheep, said of the 87-year-old former leader.
Last month, the Communications Ministry lifted a ban on YouTube after its owner, Google, installed filters to stop Thais from accessing clips deemed to insult 79-year-old King Bhumibol, a serious offence in Thailand.

YouTube said in May it had decided, after an agreement with the Thai government, to block some offending clips but took several months to implement it.

Thailand sent YouTube's management a list of 12 video clips it deemed offensive. Six of the clips were removed by their creators or because they violated YouTube's "code of service," YouTube said in a statement.

The first king-bashing clip appeared a few days after a 57-year-old Swiss man received a 10-year jail sentence for spraying graffiti on pictures of the King on his birthday in December -- a rare conviction of a foreigner.

Bhumibol, the world's longest-reigning monarch who has been on the throne for more than 60 years, granted a pardon and the Swiss man was deported.

YouTube was not available for immediate comment on Thailand's latest attempt to block access to some of its clips.
